My Travel Diaries: Sarajevo – The Road Less Travelled

Although I am admittedly a bit biased since I was born there, Sarajevo is a beautiful city! This past year was Mike’s 5th year of coming back home with me (and the year before that my in-laws joined us as well)! There is so much to write about, so please feel free to ask questions, but what I’ve decided to do is put together a short itinerary for a 1 to 2 day stay. I know I can’t cover everything, but I will point out some of my favorite places (through photos that have been taken over the years)…

Before we dive in, I just wanted to mention my favorite part of the year – SUMMER! Sarajevo has the perfect weather July through September (if you like the warm days and cool nights kind of thing). During this time, the Sarajevo Film Festival usually takes place, so the city is buzzing with all kinds of people and the cafes are packed for the best people watching you can ever hope to find. You can easily lose a day walking the streets and jumping from one cafe to the next.

Now let’s dive into a few of my recommendations of what to see / do when you visit…

Old Town – Baščaršija

This is the most amazing part of Sarajevo.

This area is not big but it has so much history and the coolest architecture. A couple of recommendations:

  • Sebilj: this is a wooden fountain that is a key sight in Baščaršija
  • Kazandžilu (Coppersmith Street): Check out the copper pieces available off of the main square by the Sebilj – there’s a street full of copper goods. If you want to take back a memento, this is the best gift for yourself or a loved one! They have the most gorgeous unique handmade vases, pitchers, trays, etc.
  • Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque (or Begova Dzamija as we call it): it’s the largest historical mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the most representative Ottoman structures in the Balkans.
    • FUN FACT: My great grandfather Mehmed Spaho (you can read about him on Wikipedia) is buried here (photo below)!
  • Muzej Sarajeva: Great museum if you’re interested in a history lesson on the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires and how World War I started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo!

Food and Drinks

  • Coffee & Drinks: I recommend going to Hotel Europe for a cappuccino or a drink. If it’s a nice day, sitting outside is always fabulous and great for people watching.
  • Lunch: You have to go to Hodžić for cevape. You can’t go to Sarajevo without trying cevape! They are a beef, onion, and bread specialty only found in this part of the world!
  • Dinner: If you’re up for a nice dinner, Libertas is just just a short walk away from the Sebilj and has fantastic seafood and wine.
  • Dessert: Torta i To at the BBI Center has the most delicious desserts, patio with a great view, and amazing teas

Prettiest Views

Sarajevo is so picturesque! My favorite spots for a great view of the city from above:

  • Vidikovac Cafe: our favorite spot for a drink / cup of coffee when the sun is setting (this is the first photo)
  • Bijela Tabija: old ruined fort with amazing views – also Restoran Bjela Tabija is right there for a drink or bite to eat
  • Park Princeva: restaurant with great views  (restaurant)
  • Last but not least is a spot in the center of the city: Hotel Hecco Deluxe – grab a coffee and take in the view from a different perspective

If you have extra time, I’d suggest going to Vrelo Bosne in Ilidza. This is a gorgeous natural spring area. You get to the main park by a horse drawn carriage through an alley of tall beautiful trees.

Last, but not least, our best friends travelled with us to Sarajevo and captured the trip in this photo and video montage. The middle part of the video and the photo below show our stay up in the mountains at Bjelašnica (actually the mountain that was the men’s downhill skiing competition back during the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo). The whole city is built into and surrounded by the mountains, which makes it just so spectacular. I hope you love it just as much as I do!
